Summer’s here Change Makers, and you know what that means- minimizing clothing to stay cool, jewelry included! That's why the best way to stay chic despite the heat is with statement earrings, like hoops and threaders. But there’s so many different types of hoops- large, small, front facing- it’s hard to choose the right ones for your outfit & hairstyle.
What’s the best way to wear your hair for each type of earring? Well, I’ve created this guide of 5 super easy, 2 minutes or less, summer hair styles to keep you cool and the earrings that go best with each. Bonus, each of these earrings gives back to charity!
Five 2 Minutes or Less Summer Hairstyles & the Earrings to Complete Your Look:
1. Slick bun
If I could wear my hair like this every day, I would! This super simple hair style doesn’t even involve blow drying, which makes it perfect for hot days. You might be thinking this only works for really long hair, but you can do this with medium length hair too, you may just need to add an extra clip or some bobby pins.
What you need
For this style I love to use my small Goody claw clips. They hold the hair in place without adding a lot of weight- you barely know they are there. I do my hair in the morning and it lasts all day without having to redo it- no matter the activity.
How to do it
After I brush my hair I make it into a low pony tail and start twisting with my left hand. As you can see in the video I use my right hand to secure the bottom and start twisting around with my left. As the hair starts to twirl and tighten into a bun, just wrap it around until you have about 3 inches left. Then you can tuck it under and pull it up through the center. Use your left hand to hold the bun while you secure it with the claw clip. And voila, easiest hair style ever! But we’re not quite done yet…
Earrings to wear
This hair style is perfect with large hoop earrings. It’s so sleek and minimal from the front that the hoops will add the extra something this look needs to make it perfect from all angles. I choose the Power Hoop Earrings to finish off this look and now I think I’m addicted- hello new go-to style!
2. Side braid
I love wearing my hair like this when I wanna feel a little more fancy or I’m going out for a date night. It’s so easy and works for almost any hair length. You can even add a little side barrette or twist to elevate it even more.
What you need
I like to use a thin elastic hair tie for this, but you could also use a ribbon or any type of hair tie you have. If you want to add a twist or barrette in the front, you’ll need that too.
How to do it
This style can be done with wet hair, although I prefer for my hair to be almost dry or completely dry. Make sure you have 3 equal sections and then braid them together by crossing one over the other. When you get about 1/3 done, bring the braid around to the side you like and continue braiding until you’ve got about 2 inches of hair remaining. Tie it off with your hair tie, but don’t forget the earrings!

I find that the side braid works best with a smaller hoop or forward facing hoop, so that the earring doesn’t get caught in it and start to mess it up. I chose the Unity Hoop Earrings which are forward facing hoops. They’re a medium sized hoop so they are easy to see when you wear them with the braid, but they don’t get caught in the hair. Now you’re ready for a night of summer fun!
3. Half up
For days when it’s a little less hot, the half up hair style is the perfect choice. It keeps the hair off your face, but still lets you have some hair down action. This is a great style for the office or meeting friends for (iced) coffee.
What you need
This is such a simple style, all you need is a thin elastic hair tie, but any hair tie, clip or a barrette will work. Use whatever you’ve got laying around!
How to do it
I like to use the tops of my ears as a guide, but my hair is actually a little thick if I go straight back and around the head. So, I actually go in at ear height but instead of parting it straight, I go up at a slight angle to pull only the top hair in to the pony tail. Then I wrap the tie around or slide in the barrette. Now, for the earrings!
Earrings to wear
This style is so versatile that you can really wear almost any earring you like. I would stay away from large hoops because they tend to get caught in the hair and you don’t see the earrings as much when you’ve got hair behind them, but you could totally wear those if you wanted. I chose the Spike Earrings, which are colorful long dangly earrings. The perfect light and fun earrings for a girlfriends meet up.
4. Low pony tail
This is THE original summer style for sure! I wear my hair like this at least two times a week and I would more if I didn’t need dry hair to do it. Some people get fancy with this and even wrap a small piece of hair around the elastic band to hide it, but I’ve always been a low maintenance kind of gal, so the hair tie showing doesn’t bother me.
What you need
You want your hair to be completely dry for this one. And depending on your hair thickness and length you’ll want to choose the right elastic hair tie. I use a thicker hair tie for this because my hair is super long. If you want to wrap a small piece of hair around to hide the hair tie, you’ll need a bobby pin.
How to do it
Brush the hair back and corral it into your hands while smoothing out any bumps from the front. Decide how high or low you’d like it to be & then secure it with your elastic tie. I like to wrap mine around 3 times, but depending on the thickness of your hair, you might only get 2 or you could get 4. If you want to hide the hair tie, take a piece of hair from the bottom of the pony tail and wrap it around the base and then secure it from underneath with a bobby pin.
Earrings to wear
Now this is by far the best hair style for any earring you want to wear from studs to huge hoops, but I chose to show it with threaders, the Thread of Hope Earrings. Threaders look great from all angles and with the hair tied back low, you really get to see them shine. They also move as you wear them, so it adds much needed variety to a very simple pony tail.

5. Messy bun
Did someone say versatile? The messy bun can be worn anywhere, from the beach to the restaurant, it’s always appropriate. The trick is picking the right accessories to fit the place and occasion.
What you need
Definitely have your hair completely dry, and I even like to do this with second day hair. You want to choose a thick elastic band that can wrap around your hair 3 times.
How to do it
Make the hair into a high pony tail. Then start wrapping the elastic band around like you would for a pony tail, but stop half way on the hair. Wrap the remaining hair back around and bring the hair tie around again stopping half way. Then, gather the remaining hair that’s not secured down yet and tie it up with the hair tie. I like to leave some out and I feel like it should look a little crazy on purpose- it’s more fun that way.

Power Hoop Earrings:

Ok, you can totally wear any earrings with this style, but I think the best are large hoops like the Power Hoop Earrings or the Come Together Hoops. Both of these earring styles look good from every angle. The hair is fun, but the earrings are even more fun. You’ll look and feel like the life of the party no matter where you go.
